ESSENTIAL PROTECTION FOR ANYBODY PARTICIPATING IN CONTACT SPORTS

A mouthguard is a removable polyvinyl shield most commonly worn over your upper teeth that will protect your teeth, soft tissues and jaws from a traumatic injury that may occur during sporting activities. A mouthguard will not only protect your teeth from possible fractures but will also protect your entire mouth by cushioning a blow and distributing the force of the impact. This will help to prevent jaw fractures and reduce neck and muscle injuries that may occur when your lower jaw is unexpectedly forced into the upper jaw or sideways out of position. We recommend that all patients who participate in any contact sport or any activity where they may suffer an accidental blow to the face wear a mouthgaurd whilst participating in this recreational activity. A custom fitted mouthguard is made from a mould taken of your teeth in the dental surgery and fits tightly and comfortably over your teeth. This type of mouthguard allows you to breathe and talk freely and is the type recommended by the dental profession as it has been clinically proven to be the most effective in preventing injuries to the teeth and jaws.

Childrens teeth also need protection so it is important that they also wear mouthgaurds if they participate in any of the above mentioned activities. We also make mouthgaurds for children who are undergoing orthodontic treatment - so it is not necessary for them to stop participating whilst they are wearing braces. We make mouthgaurds ranging from single colours to complex custom designed patterns. It has been clinically proven that home made mouthgaurds provide very little protection to the oral and facial tissues. Remember your smile is probably your most important cosmetic asset so give it the best possible protection.
